Spotify Usability Heuristics

#1: Visibility of system status

Usability Rating: 2
Informs the user what action has been taken and the status of it.
Spotify will notify the user when a song has been added to the queue. However, there are some status such as song removal that it will not notify the user. This is a minor problem since it can cause confusion if the user is unsure if a song or the right one has been removed especially for a larger playlist.

#2: Match between system and the real world

Usability Rating: 0
Terminology that is common to the average person and is relevant.
The term Library used on Spotify will direct the user to their music collection- just as a library is a place with collection of books. User will understand the home button will take them back to the main page.

#3: User control and freedom

Usability Rating: 3
The ability to leave, stay, or undo based on the user's discretion.
Spotify provides escape routes or options to allow the user to navigate around the site. However, the option to undo a removal is not available. It forces the user to navigate and add the song back onto a list if they have accidentally removed the song.

#4: Consistency and standards

Usability Rating: 0
The layout of the website should remain in it's standardized form throughout the site.
Spotify's layout remains the same when entering different areas. The escape routes and music player is placed in the exact location at all time.

#5: Error prevention

Usability Rating: 0
Inform the user that an occur has occurred.
Typing in the wrong detail will notify the user an error has occur and give hints on the issue to allow the user to take necessary action.

#6: Recognition rather than recall

Usability Rating: 0
Icons or element that makes it easy for the user to remember instead of having to remember what button does what.
The music bar has options that is easy to recognize, so user will not get confused and limit the use of recalling. Everything on Spotify is generally recognizable.

#7: Flexibility and efficiency of use

Usability Rating: 2
Functions like a shortcut that speeds up an action for the user.
Instead of using the mouse to pause the music, pressing on the spacebar will pause the music or pressing enter will open up the user's profile tab. Since this is a music base platform, I will say an issue is the inability to skip, replay, or go back on a song without having to manually click on the music bar.

#8: Aesthetic and minimalist design

Usability Rating: 0
The visual design of Spotify is very straightforward and decluttered.
It has sufficient space but also enough content to keep the page aesthetically pleasing.

#9: Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors

Usability Rating: 0
Similar to error prevention #5, #9 displays a message in simple terms to explain the error that has occur. The user should be able to understand the issue and take needed action.

#10: Help and documentation

Usability Rating: 0
An informative area of the site that provides information to the user in need of help.
A shortcut to accessing the help desk on Spotify is by pressing f1. It will link the user to their support site. There are supports regarding to payment, upgrades, device assistance, etc.
