Amazon Usability Heuristics
#9: Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
Usability Rating: 0
#8: Aesthetic and minimalist design
Usability Rating: 1
I have mixed feeling about Amazon's aesthetic. Amazon does a great job at displaying a lot of items, and it is almost convincing to buy more things which is its intended purpose: to sell to consumer. With the plethora of items, the site does great with white-spacing. Personally though, the amount of whitespace and words tired my eyes out.
#7: Flexibility and efficiency of use
Usability Rating: 2
Having the feature of a sidebar to show the items you currently have in the cart while you search is useful but in this case it is a bit redundant at least from my experience (discussed also below on #3). Adding items to the cart already took me straight to the checkout even when I was not ready to checkout.
#4: Consistency and standards
Usability Rating: 1
Each general category page has their own layout which is not an issue, and I find it to be a bit relieving to see slight changes. Inconsistency does come in when viewing products. The quick look feature is scattered on random products and the quick look feature does not operate effectively because it only enlarges the thumbnail of the product which I see as an redundant feature.
#3: User control and freedom
Usability Rating: 3
Adding items to the cart has been a problem for me. Every so often when I try to add something to my cart it automatically takes me to the checkout, and it makes me lose the spot I was on. This is very frustrating because I have to constantly hit the back button and worry about losing the item in my cart. Also, the large popup on the side could be shrunken.
