HBO Max Usability Heuristics (W6: INFM372)

HBO Max

Task: Log in and find a reality show or movie to watch

Good:
Aesthetic and minimalist design
The color scheme of HBO max clean and clear. I can see that purple is the color associated with HBOmax.

Bad:
Flexibility and efficiency of use
Usability Rating: 1
I do not like how I can not see the preview of the shows and movies. I have to click on the video to see the preview and then go back to resume searching for movies or shows to watch.

Consistency and standards
Usability Rating: 1
HBOmax will automatically sign out when you exit the page. I want the page to keep me signed in unless I indicated that I want to  stay logged out.

Recognition rather than recall
Usability Rating: 2
Filtering is not something I could easily grasp the first time. There are a lot of options and some options are redundant.

For example, when I click on "reality" in the genre list, there is only an option filter for series, and it confuses me because I understand that as there are only reality shows and no reality movies which might be the case

As opposed to the image below, I can clearly see that there are options for both movies and shows.

It is also confusing because on the top left we can see that there is an option for movie and series, but it is not a part of the filtering for the "reality" page. If I click on the movies or series on the top left it will direct me to a general video list not relating to the "reality" page; it is separate.

Recommendation:

For the login, have a "remember me" option. The filtering could be improved by condensing and removing redundancy. For example, movies and series in the top left corner can be misleading although it is for consistency. Additionally, HBOmax can adapt previewing videos like Netflix; it makes navigating for movies easier.
